Drug cartels outmatch, outgun Mexico's police

By Miguel Tovar, AP
MEXICO CITY — Mexico's drug cartels are becoming increasingly skilled at ambushing police and soldiers, luring them into traps, cutting off escape routes with flaming vehicles and overwhelming their targets in commando-style raids.
The attacks have driven the death toll of police and soldiers to record levels this year and fueled fears that government forces, often outgunned by the cartels, are now being out-strategized as well.

"These are war-fighting tactics they're using," says Javier Cruz Angulo, an expert on crime at the Center for Economic Investigation and Education, agraduate school in Mexico City. "It's gone way beyond the normal strategies of organized crime."

On Monday, gunmen sealed off a highway with buses that they set ablaze, boxing in a convoy of federal police trucks in Michoacán. They launched a gunbattle from high ground on both sides of the highway, killing 12 of the officers. Then they whisked away their own dead and wounded.

A separate attack in the northern city of Chihuahua killed three officers. And on Sunday, gunmen camouflaged with foliage attacked an army patrol near Tepalcatepec, the Mexican Defense Department said. The clash left three gunmen dead, one arrested and two soldiers wounded.

The ambushes, and an apparently unrelated clash between prison drug gangs that killed 29, contributed to a record 95 drug-trade-related deaths on Monday — the most since President Felipe Calderón launched a crackdown in December 2006.

On Tuesday, a shootout with police in the tourist town of Taxco killed 14 alleged cartel members.

In all, 324 police officers and soldiers have been killed so far in 2010, compared with 511 in all of 2009, according to the Reforma newspaper.

The wave of ambushes began on July 11, when the Familia Michoacana drug gang launched 15 coordinated attacks over two days on police stations and patrols in eight cities across three states. In one attack, gunmen surrounded a police bus and killed all 12 officers on board.

Since then, there have been at least 12 similar ambushes. Gunmen often use anonymous callers to lure patrols down blocked streets.

In one of the most dramatic attacks, gunmen hijacked 16 vehicles, including buses and tractor-trailers, to block streets around a military garrison in the northern city of Reynosa on March 30.

They then launched an attack on soldiers leaving the base. The soldiers managed to repel the attack and the gunmen fled.

Other ambushes include:

• April 24: A street vendor flags down a police convoy in the northern city of Ciudad Juárez. When it stops, three vehicles block them in and assailants open fire, killing six federal police, a city policeman and a civilian.

•April 9: Three police carrying out an arrest warrant in western Guerrero state are surrounded by 10 gunmen armed with assault rifles. The gunmen kill them in a hail of 450 bullets.

• Feb. 20: Two patrolmen and a detective are lured to a beer distributor in Nogales with an anonymous call reporting a robbery. Gunmen open fire, killing the detective and wounding the patrolmen.

•Jan. 29: Gunmen fire from an overpass and both sides of a highway as a federal police convoy passes near the western town of Maravatío. Five officers are killed and seven wounded.

Obama's love for fast food helps business

Despite First Lady Michelle Obama's focus on healthy eating at the White House, President Barack Obama likes to visit places that sell burgers and wings....and the presidential impact is long-lasting.

Just last month POTUS made an unscheduled stop by Duff's Famous Wings near Buffalo for the local delicacy.

"This is the wing capital!" he explained to reporters. The president opted for medium wings ("Hot"), then -- at the urging of the crowd -- added a few extra spicy ones, plus french fries and onion rings to his order.

Days ahead of his inauguration, then President elect Obama opted for a chili dog at Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington which proved to be a boon for the eatery.

"After 50 years, we kinda thought we were kinda there and very established in DC and the word had gotten out nationally. When then President elect Obama came in, it just blew the roof off the whole place. It was the perfect time with the perfect guy. It was just unprecedented. The place has just been electric since then, lines have even been in the alley at certain times," said Nizam Ali, Ben's Chili Bowl.

Not only has Ben's expanded, now it has a gift shop, and ships food all over, taking orders over the phone and the Internet.

Obama might takes the first lady to upscale restaurants (Komi, Nora's, Citronelle, Equinox, Blue Duck Tavern) for date nights, but likes local joints (Five Guys, Ray's Hell-Burger, Ben's Chili Bowl) for the occasional lunch with the guys.

Before the election and before she decided to mount a campaign against childhood obesity, Michelle Obama had joined her husband on the campaign trail at the famed Pat's in Philadelphia.

However, not all politicians get the order right.

Senator John Kerry, who failed in his white house bid, will be remembered for an offbeat order.

"Kerry did come here. He asked for a cheesesteak, with swiss cheese, which is basically unheard of," said Tom Francano, General Manager, Pat's King of Steaks.

No doubt a presidential visit is good for a fortunate mom and pop business. But a culinary themed photo opportunity is also an easy way for a politician to connect to voters.

"The more that they are engaged in their business, the more important it is for them to take certain periods of time, even if it's very rare to get outside of that bubble, as we know it. And to connect back with the people. Those are the people that put them there," said Anita McBride, former Chief of Staff, First Lady Laura Bush.

And in the process of getting the job done, a president might just help put another unsuspecting spot on the map.

Statement by Apple on iPhone 4 pre-orders

Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 6,00,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4 on Tuesday.

In a statement, Apple said:

Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions.

Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

SWITZERLAND STUNS SPAIN

Switzerland pulled off a shocking upset at the World Cup on Wednesday, beating European champion Spain 1-0 on Gelson Fernandes' second-half goal.

© AP
Gelson Fernandes bundled the ball into the net in the 52nd minute in one of Switzerland's few attacks, ending Spain's run of 12 straight wins and handing the Spanish team only its second loss in 50 games.

''Today wasn't our day,'' Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. ''We have two games ahead of us. We have to find a way to win them.''

Spain dominated possession throughout the match, but could find no way through Switzerland's determined defense. It was Switzerland's first ever win over Spain.

Eren Derdiyok created Switzerland's goal by surging through the center of Spain's defense and getting around goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Gerard Pique's tackle stopped Derdiyok, but Fernandes pounced on the loose ball and forced it into the net.

At the final whistle, Fernandes fell to his knees and raised both arms to the sky. The entire team then went to the small section of Swiss fans at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and saluted them as they cheered and rang cow bells. Derdiyok nearly doubled the Swiss lead in the 75th minute when he shrugged off Carlos Puyol's tackle and poked the ball past Casillas, but the shot hit the post. Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso came closest to equalizing when his powerful drive in the 70th minute hit the cross bar.

Spain's misery was compounded when Andres Iniesta was substituted in the 77th after a hard tackle from Stephan Lichtsteiner. Switzerland was knocked out of the last World Cup on penalties by Ukraine in the round of 16 without conceding a goal in the tournament. The Swiss have now gone 490 minutes without conceding a World Cup goal.

Spain was lifted before kick off by the return from injury of Iniesta, but the Barcelona midfielder could not provide the spark to ignite his country's attack. Del Bosque brought on Liverpool striker Fernando Torres in the 62nd minute, but he too could find no way through the Swiss wall of defenders. David Villa was Spain's most dangerous forward, but the top scorer from the European Championship in 2008 repeatedly saw his efforts blocked or go wide.

Villa passed Lichtsteiner in the 10th minute, but goalkeeper Diego Benaglio dived at his feet to snuff out the chance. Then his free kick deflected wide off the wall after Stephane Grichting pulled down Iniesta just outside the penalty area.

In an indication to Spain's sputtering forward play, it was center back Gerard Pique who came closest to breaking the stalemate when Iniesta's through ball in the 24th minute set him free and he sent a low shot that Benaglio saved. Villa showed the frustration creeping into Spain's game when he flung both arms into the air after Iniesta had sent a shot high over the bar shortly before halftime.

A minute later, it was Villa who was guilty of failing to finish a nice move when he made room for himself on the left by cutting inside the sliding tackle of substitute Steve von Bergen, but saw his attempted lob drift well wide of the goal.

Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in the other Group H match.

CHILE EDGE HONDURAS 1-0

Jean Beausejour scored the only goal and Chile beat Honduras 1-0 for its first World Cup victory in 48 years.

Jean Beausejour scored the only goal and Chile beat Honduras 1-0 for its first World Cup victory in 48 years.

Beausejour knocked in a cross from Mauricio Isla in the 34th minute to give the Chileans three points in Group H.

Chile came close to doubling its lead on several occasions. In the 62nd, forward Alexis Sanchez dragged a clear-cut chance wide after he was put through by playmaker Jorge Valdivia. And in the 64th, defender Waldo Ponce saw his close-range header saved by Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares.

Chile was on the offensive almost from the start, with midfielder Matias Fernandez threatening in the second minute with a free kick that curled just over the bar. Valdivia tapped one in the net in the 75th but was ruled offside.

Honduras found it difficult to break through a well-organized Chilean defense, which was led by Gary Medel, and was restricted to long-range efforts, primarily from lone striker Carlos Pavon. Honduras' best chance came from midfielder Ramon Nunez, who threatened with a free kick in first-half injury time that was tipped over the bar by Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Chile's last victory at the World Cup came on June 16, 1962, when it hosted the tournament and beat Yugoslavia 1-0 for third place. This is Chile's first World Cup appearance since 1998, when the team managed to get past the group stage with three draws.

Chile plays Switzerland next on Monday in Port Elizabeth, while Honduras will face Spain at Ellis Park.

GM scores $9 million for giving Armando Gallaraga a $53,000 Corvette

General Motors’ quick and sudden move to give Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Gallaraga a Chevrolet Corvette convertible cost them $53,000. However, despite giving away the car for nary a penny, GM is still all smiles about the whole thing.

Proving that they’re also shrewd businessmen, General Motors made a calculated decision of giving Gallaraga the Corvette, not just because they wanted to reward the man who lost out on a perfect game because of an errant call by an umpire, but also because they thought that by doing so, the media mileage behind that story would’ve made everything worth it. Turns out, the gamble paid off. Big time.

According to Joyce Julis & Associates, a Michigan-based firm that deals with stuff involving sponsorships and their public reach, GM’s give-away of the Corvette to Gallaraga netted them a ton of media coverage, thanks in large part to how big the whole story became. JJ&A estimates that the media mileage GM received was equivalent to that of $9 million, which in case you’re wondering is a far cry from the $53,000 Corvette they gave away.

"Race" is a nice animated movie pick-up for car-loving teens

Any parent with a young teenage kid that has any remote interest in cars will need to hop online and scoop up a copy of “Race”, an independent computer animated sci-fi action film that’s catered towards an audience in the PG-13 demographic – OK, so it’s not for the little tykes because the movie’s got little doses of suggestive images and action violence.

Taking the plot of good versus evil and integrating a lot of car racing into it, “Race” features protagonists – and drivers – Trance Caldron and Team Earth duking it out with nemesis Team Tagmatian where the fate of the entire universe is hanging on the balance on who can stake claim to the prestigious Star Car Championship. Like what the movie says, “in a race between good and evil...winning is everything.”

"Race" is available online at a standard retail price of $32.99

The whole project is the brainchild of Hyper Image, a post production and animation studio in Glendale, California. As their very first feature, the company is banking on a strong reception for “Race”, which they should easily attain for its highly-entertaining plot and, of course, all those mach cars trying to take each other out.

Range Rover LRX spied with new camouflage

showing the 2011 Range Rover LRX in a new set of black and white camouflage, doing away with the psychedelic tie-dye seen in previous pics. Testers have also added padding to the side and rear glass to better cover up design details, making those windows look much smaller than they actually will be.

The rear side windows will taper towards the vehicle's C-pillar, but they most likely will not be as small as the indentations seem to indicate. Look for this long, continuous piece of glass to blend in with blacked-out pillars and the rear glass, just like the LRX concept.

Almost production-ready, the LRX prototype shows a different set of wheels, big wheel arches and large side sills. The low-slung roof indicates that a sunroof is also built in. With LED lighting at the back, the Range Rover LRX could be a hit when it is introduced on the market, especially as a 2WD version, a first for Land Rover.

Look for the three-door crossover to be officially announced later this summer before an unveiling at the Paris Motor Show. Speculation has UK sales beginning in a year, with pricing starting in the low £30k range.

Land Rover Defender by Aznom

Aznom and Romeo Ferraris have teamed up to create a modified Land Rover Defender.

Despite looking rather conservative, Aznom equipped the SUV with carbon fiber bumpers, a two-tone matte paint job, red accents, and black wheels with Kumho Road Venture tires. Inside, the cabin boasts alcantara upholstery, a carbon fiber steering wheel, Sparco sport seats, and carbon fiber trim.

Under the hood, Romeo Ferraris tweaked the 2.4-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine to produce 152 hp (113 kW / 154 PS) - an increase of 30 hp (22 kW / 30 PS). While no performance data was released, the upgrade should help to move the Defender with a little extra oomph.
